Why this site exists
The book-gift category has a specific problem: every listing looks the same. Search for a book light and you get four hundred near-identical photographs, all claiming eighty hours and three color temperatures and eye protection. Search for bookends and every one of them is “heavy duty” and not one publishes a weight.
The usual response is a gift guide assembled by picking whatever photographs best. Ours is to read every seller’s own listing against a fixed checklist and print what is there and what is missing. Across this site, 112 of 406 spec cells currently read “Not published” — which turns out to be the most useful thing we can tell you about several of these categories.
Who writes this

An enthusiast who is genuinely into this. I read the listings, compile the published specs, do the arithmetic, and say which ones to skip. No lab coat. I am not a lighting engineer, a bookbinder, an optometrist or a conservator, and nothing on this site should be read as though I were. What I am is somebody who reads a lot, finds this category genuinely irritating to shop in, and is willing to open forty listings and put them in a table.
Where a page touches something outside that — eye strain, book preservation, posture — I cite published guidance from bodies that do have the expertise, link to it, and say plainly that I am not the expert. Those are the pages where the sources section at the bottom matters most.
How the site is put together
Every product is a typed record rather than a paragraph of prose. That is a deliberate engineering decision with an editorial purpose: a price cannot appear in copy, a spec cannot appear without a source attached to it, and “Not published” is the only legal alternative to a sourced figure. In a normal content file a writer can type any number. Here a missing source is a build error.
The scores work the same way. One of the five components is computed from the data and four are editorial judgment, and every page labels which is which. The methodology page sets the whole thing out, including the checklists.
How we are funded
Amazon commissions, and nothing else. If you buy through a link here, Amazon pays us and you pay the same price you would have paid anyway. No brand pays for placement, no brand sees a page before it publishes, and nobody has sent us a product — a fact that would be obvious from the writing even if we did not say it.

Who publishes it
Shelf Gift is published by Slate Mill Group. It is an online publication with no shop, no premises and no service area — which is why there is no address or phone number anywhere on this site, and why you will not find a “book lover gifts near me” page here even though people search for one. We are not near you and we are not going to imply otherwise.
Getting in touch
The contact page has a form, and info@shelfgift.com reaches the same inbox. Corrections go to the top of the pile: if a figure here is wrong, or a seller has updated a listing since we read it, that is the most useful message you can send us and we will fix it and say that we did.
