What this site collects, what it does not, and what happens when you click a link out to a retailer. Last updated 7 September 2026.

Quiet library shelves receding into the distance

The short version

We do not sell anything, so we never take a payment detail or a delivery address. We do not have accounts, so there is nothing to log in to. The only information you can give us directly is what you type into the contact form, and the only information we collect automatically is anonymous analytics about which pages get read.

Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics 4 to count page views and see which guides people actually read. It sets cookies in your browser and reports aggregate data — pages, referrers, rough geography, device type. We do not use it to build a profile of you, we do not connect it to anything else, and we do not sell or share the data.

We also record an event when a buy button is clicked, containing which product and which page. It tells us which recommendations people find useful. It does not contain anything that identifies you.

If you would rather not be counted, browser tracking protection, an ad blocker or Google’s own opt-out add-on will all prevent it, and nothing on this site stops working as a result.

The contact form

If you write to us through the contact page, the form sends us your name, your email address, the subject you chose and your message, by email. We use it to reply and for nothing else. It is not added to a mailing list, because there is no mailing list.

The form also records how long the page was open before you submitted, and includes a hidden field that real people never fill in. Both exist to stop automated spam and neither tells us anything about you.

Affiliate links

When you click a buy button, you pass through our own redirect and on to the retailer with a tracking tag attached. The retailer — currently Amazon in every case — then applies their own cookies and their own privacy policy, which governs everything that happens after you leave this site.

We are told by the retailer that a purchase happened and that it came from us. We are not told who you are or what else you looked at. See our disclosure for how the commercial side works, and Amazon’s own privacy notice for what they do.

Cookies

The cookies set on this site are Google Analytics’s. We set none of our own — there is no login, no basket and no personalization to remember. Retailers you click through to set their own, on their own domains.

Children

This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

Your choices

  • Block or clear cookies in your browser, and analytics stops.
  • Ask us to delete a message you sent through the contact form, and we will delete it from the inbox.
  • Ask what we hold about you. The honest answer is almost certainly nothing beyond an email you sent us.

Either request goes to info@shelfgift.com.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it. If a change is material — a new analytics tool, a new data flow — we will say so rather than quietly editing.
