The best book lights, ranked on what their sellers will tell you

This is the one to buy if you are choosing without knowing much about the person. It is a clip light, so it works on a hardcover, a paperback, a Kindle or the edge of a music stand, and the 4.3-inch horizontal head means the beam covers a full page width rather than a hot circle in the middle of it.

The reason it scores highest here is disclosure. Six of our seven checklist items appear on the listing, including the two the rest of the category skips: brightness expressed in lumens rather than as a number of dots on a button, and both ends of the runtime range. Ninety hours is the lowest of five brightness settings; twelve hours is the brightest. Somebody reading a chapter a night at a middling setting sits between those, and knowing that is worth more than the ninety-hour headline.

The listing also mentions gift packaging and a bookmark in the box, which matters more than it sounds when the thing is going under a tree rather than into your own nightstand drawer. It is one of very few in this search that says anything at all about how it arrives.

Weight is the one blank. Nobody in this category publishes it, which is mildly irritating for a device that clips to a paperback cover, but it is not a Glocusent failing so much as a category one.

It hangs around the neck and points two heads down at whatever is in your lap, which means it works on a book, a tablet, knitting, a jigsaw, and a paperback held one-handed under a duvet. Run both heads bright and it will be a fraction of that. Still, on the published numbers it outlasts everything else here by a wide margin.

The 90-degree beam is the detail that decides whether this is a good gift for someone with a sleeping partner. A wide beam lights the whole bed; a narrow one lights the page. Glocusent publishes the angle, which is more than most sellers do.

The trade-off is that some people simply do not want to wear a device. There is no way to know that in advance about someone else, which is why this sits below the clip light as a blind gift even though the numbers are better.

The 30-minute timer is the reason this one is on the list. If the person you are buying for regularly falls asleep with the book open, every other light in this guide is still on at three in the morning and flat by breakfast. This one is not.

Four color temperatures is one more than the usual three, and the extra step sits at 4500K natural white, between the warm and the cold. That is the setting for reading a dense page at 9pm rather than a novel at midnight, and it is genuinely useful to have.

The listing is unusually straight about what is in the box: a one-meter USB-C cable and no wall charger. Everyone ships it that way and almost nobody says so.

This is the same wide-head design as the stepless Gritin above with one deliberate difference: five fixed brightness steps rather than a continuous dial, and a charging port the listing actually names. If you have ever tried to find a particular brightness again on a stepless light in the dark, fixed steps are the better idea.

Whether that is an upgrade or a downgrade depends entirely on the person. Someone who wants the dimmest possible setting and no more will prefer stepless; someone who wants the same setting every night will prefer steps. Both are defensible and neither is a compromise.

This is the older, plainer Gritin: nine beads instead of nineteen, a 1000 mAh cell instead of 1200, and no Kelvin values anywhere on the listing. It is the one that has been selling in this category for years and it is the reason the category looks the way it does.

The one thing it does that its bigger siblings do not mention is stand up by itself — there is a non-slip base, so it works as a small desk lamp as well as a clip. For a bedside table with no lamp on it, that is a genuinely different use.

It sits low here on disclosure, not on function. Three unnamed color modes and an unnamed charging port are two blanks on a seven-item checklist, and both are things the newer models publish.

Independent switches on each head sounds like a small thing and is not. Reading in bed on your side means one head is closer to the page than the other, and being able to turn the far one down — or off — is the difference between an even page and a bright half.

The lowest color temperature here is 3000K rather than the 1800K amber the clip lights offer. If the goal is the least stimulating possible light before sleep, this is a step brighter than the alternatives.

It is the previous generation of the neck light directly above it in this guide, and Glocusent's own listing for the newer one says the neckband is 15% thinner. If comfort over a long session is the deciding factor, that is a real reason to spend the difference.

Nine brightness levels is the headline and it is a real one — no other light in this guide publishes more than five. If the person you are buying for is fussy about exactly how bright is too bright, this is the one with the most room to be fussy in.

The battery capacity is never stated, only that it is high-capacity, which is a marketing adjective rather than a figure. Sixty hours is published; what it is sixty hours of, and from what size cell, is not.

Two blanks on the checklist — the charging port and the Kelvin values — put it near the bottom of this guide on disclosure. It is not a bad light; it is a listing that tells you less than its competitors' do, and on a category where every product looks identical in the photographs, that is what we can actually measure.

The idea is good. A thin illuminated panel that lies flat across the page is a different answer to the same problem, and for anyone who finds a clip light's beam too directional it is worth knowing the format exists.
