Book sleeves and covers, and which problem each one solves
A zipped pouch, a fabric wrap and an archival jacket look like alternatives and are not. They protect against completely different things.

“Book sleeve” covers at least three unrelated objects, which is why the search results are confusing. Sorting them out first makes the choice obvious.
The three formats
Sizing is the whole decision
Every one of these is sold to fit a size, and books are not standard. Measure before you buy, or at minimum know which of these the person reads:
- Mass-market paperback — the small ones, about 4.25 by 6.9 inches. The BCW sleeves are cut for exactly this and nothing else.
- Trade paperback — about 5.5 by 8.5 inches, which is roughly A5. The MBAIYO cover is A5 and will not fit either of the other categories.
- Hardcover — varies enormously. The Homakover pouch at 12 by 9.5 inches swallows most of them; the ClearBags jackets are sized by spine height, 7.5 inches for the pack here, with other sizes available.
The Homakover listing says to measure your books before buying. That is exactly the right advice and one of the few times a seller in any category we cover has volunteered it.
Why a wrap-around cover is a different product
A pouch protects a book you are carrying. A wrap-around cover protects one you are reading, which is when corners actually curl and covers actually crease. If the complaint is that their books come back from holiday looking chewed, the pouch is the answer. If it is that their favorite paperback has gone soft at the corners from being read four times, the cover is.
The MBAIYO has two details worth having: a bookmark ribbon molded into the cover, so there is always one, and cotton construction that can be washed rather than replaced.
Archival, and what acid-free actually means
Ordinary plastic sleeves can make things worse over years — they off-gas, and the acid migrates into the paper, which accelerates the yellowing they were bought to prevent. Archival-grade polypropylene does not.
Both archival products here publish it: the BCW sleeves are described as acid-free archival quality, the ClearBags jackets as 2.0 mil polypropylene, archival safe. If you are buying protection for a collection somebody intends to keep for decades, that phrase is the one to look for and it is genuinely load-bearing rather than marketing.
What is not published
The most useful gap: neither of the two everyday products states whether it is padded, and on something whose entire job is protection, padding is the specification. The Homakover describes a zip and a front pocket and never says what is between the fabric layers.
If you want protection against being dropped rather than against being scuffed, that omission is the thing to weigh.

A book sleeve solves one specific and very real problem: a paperback carried loose in a bag comes out with a bent cover and a cracked spine. A zipped pouch stops that, and this one has a front pocket for the bookmark, the pen and the glasses that otherwise rattle around beside it.
Twelve by nine and a half inches is a generous size — it will swallow a trade paperback comfortably and a mass-market one loosely. The seller says to measure the book first, which is exactly the right advice and rarely given.
What is not published is what it is made of or whether there is any padding in it, and on a product whose entire job is protection, those are the two specs that matter most. Three of six checklist items.
The handle strap makes it a carry object in its own right, which is either useful or an unnecessary loop depending on how they travel.
Give it if
A commuter, a traveler, or anyone whose paperbacks come home from holiday looking chewed.
Skip it if
They read hardcovers exclusively. Measure first — a large hardback will not fit.

This is a different object from the zipped pouch above and the two are not alternatives. A pouch protects a book you are carrying; a wrap-around cover protects one you are reading, which is when the corners actually get curled and the cover gets creased.
The integral bookmark is the good design decision. A ribbon molded into the cover means there is always one, which anybody who has lost three in a month will appreciate.
Cotton and washable is the other real advantage over anything vinyl or plastic: a fabric cover that has been in a bag for six months can be cleaned rather than replaced.
It is A5 only. That is one size, it is the common trade-paperback size, and it will not fit a mass-market paperback or a hardback. Check what they read before buying.

This is library-grade kit rather than a gift. A 2.0 mil polypropylene jacket is what a library puts on a dust jacket to stop it tearing, and twenty-five of them will do a whole shelf of hardcovers.
The measurement is published precisely — 7.5 inches of spine height, up to 15 inches of total width, adjustable — which is unusual and necessary, because a book jacket that is the wrong size is useless rather than merely imperfect. ClearBags publishes a range of other sizes too.
It is the right present for exactly one kind of person: someone who owns first editions, signed copies, or a collection they care about physically. For everyone else it is twenty-five pieces of plastic.

Acid-free is the whole point and it is the spec worth understanding. Ordinary plastic sleeves off-gas and accelerate the yellowing they are supposed to prevent; archival polypropylene does not. For a paperback collection somebody intends to keep for thirty years, that is the difference.
The sizing is exact and unforgiving. These are cut for mass-market pocket paperbacks — the small ones — and a trade paperback will not go in. The seller publishes both the sleeve dimensions and the book dimensions they are cut for, which is the correct way to specify this and rare.
A hundred sleeves is a project, not a gift. It scores low on gift readiness here for exactly that reason, and it is on the site because for one specific person it is the right answer and nothing else is.

What neither of the everyday products in this guide publishes is whether it is padded, which is the specification that would tell you how much protection against a drop you are getting.
