Marking passages as you read — a line, a scene, something to come back to — is now how a very large number of people read, and it is the habit that feeds everything else. Tabs are also the input to a reading journal: four tabs in a finished book make the journal entry write itself instead of being reconstructed from memory a month later.
How we judged this one
- Material. PET film or paper. This is the spec that decides whether a tab peels off cleanly or tears the page, and every seller here publishes it.
- Size. Whether it sits inside a paperback margin or projects past the page edge. Published as exact dimensions by four of the five.
- Colors and shapes. How many distinct categories a color-coding system can support before it runs out.
- Quantity, last. It is the number every listing shouts and the least interesting of the four, because they all last a long time.
PET, not paper — the one non-negotiable
A paper tab tears when you peel it off and leaves adhesive on the page. A PET film tab does not, and it can be repositioned. On a library book, a borrowed book, or anything you intend to resell, that is the difference between annotating and damaging.

Annotating with tabs — marking a line, a passage, a scene to come back to — is now how a very large number of readers read, and a person who does it goes through tabs constantly. This is the gift that actually gets used up, which is a better property in a present than it sounds.

Two shapes in one box is the reason to pick this over the single-shape sets. A rectangle marks a passage; an arrow points at a line. Once you have used both you stop wanting to go back, because the arrow does something a rectangle cannot — it identifies a spot rather than a region.
At 0.47 by 1.78 inches these are slightly wider and slightly shorter than the 1.73-by-0.43 tabs that dominate this category. On a mass-market paperback that extra width is marginally more visible from the page edge, which is either useful or fussy depending on how many you use.
